Does organic coffee get grown differently?

Organic coffee must be grown in shade. Without the trees’ foliage, the sun could quickly scorch the soil and would require huge amounts of (non-organic) fertilizer to replenish nutrients. When coffee farmers plant indigenous trees in their place to shade their crops, this will positively impact biodiversity.

The method of cultivation is different from conventional coffee, where vast areas of land have to be cleared because of the dependence on intense sunlight to encourage rapid growth. With no synthetic fertilizers, organic coffee production is a slower process.

Starbucks began buying Fairtrade coffee in the year 2000. Since then, we’ve spent more than $1.6 million on Fairtrade premiums (on top of the price we pay for green coffee) that are utilized by the producer groups for investment in the economy and society on the organizational and community levels.


Where does organic coffee originate from?

As per the Center for Tropical Agricultural Research and Higher Education in Costa Rica (CATIE), 75 percent of the world’s organic coffee originates from Latin America. In 2010 Peru was the largest producer of organic beans with more than 423,000 bags shipped during the year. Other big coffee producers are Honduras, Mexico, Brazil, Colombia, El Salvador, and Guatemala. Many Asian or African countries also grow organic coffee, such as Indonesia as well as Ethiopia.
